Lao PDR Delegation Attends the Regional Technical Workshop on Introduction from the Sea (IFS) under CITES in Bangkok, Thailand

BANGKOK, Thailand, 7 August 2026 – A delegation from the Lao PDR, comprising representatives from the Department of Livestock and Fisheries and the Department of Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, successfully participated in the "Regional Technical Workshop on Introduction from the Sea (IFS) for Southeast Asian and East Asian Countries," held from 4 to 7 August 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Jointly organized by the CITES Secretariat and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), the workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of CITES Parties in implementing IFS obligations for CITES-listed marine species taken from Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ). Key technical sessions focused on Legal Acquisition Findings (LAF), Non-Detriment Findings (NDF), combating IUU fishing, and maintaining the chain of custody across international supply chains.

During the interactive sessions, the Lao delegation actively presented the country s legal framework, current implementation status, and strategic roadmap. Highlighted priority measures for Lao PDR include the formulation of national Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), specialized application checklists, the establishment of inter-agency coordination mechanisms among CITES Authorities, fisheries officials, customs, and border inspection agencies, as well as robust transit and transshipment monitoring controls. These proactive measures demonstrate Lao PDRs firm commitment to ensuring transparent, effective, and fully compliant implementation of CITES obligations in alignment with international standards.
